“How do I find a good music teacher for my child?”

My oldest son knows the lyrics to every song.  He can hear a song a few times and remember all the words - he’s an auditory learner.  My youngest son is learning to play piano by watching YouTube videos and he mimics what he sees - he’s a visual learner. I need to touch everything.  I like to play music, dissect the parts and figure out how it works - I’m a kinesthetic learner.

Everyone learns in a different way and a good music teacher will pay close attention to how each student learns and adjust the teaching style accordingly.  Exploring patterns and practicing echoing simple song phrases will work for some students while introducing steady beats and identifying percussive sounds will work for others. Look for a teacher who can identify how your child learns and notice if they are teaching to your child’s learning style.

Music should be fun, educational and ignite a passion in your child.  A teacher that can touch all three of these areas in each lesson will be sure to have your student learning and eager for more!

Kris Manning

That Girl Drummer, Kris Manning, is a percussionist with over 30 years experience playing music. From rock and blues to classical and world, she happily plays it all.  

Her background includes a Percussion Performance Degree from the University of Connecticut and Music Composition Studies from the Hartt School of Music. She has toured Russia with John Beck and 13 percussionists from the Percussive Arts Society. She has also studied marimba with Leigh Howard Stevens and was one of the winners of the Concerto Competition at the University of Connecticut in 1990.

Kris's teaching style is open and accepting, playing to each student's strengths.  She draws out the natural abilities from each student by helping them develop their own personal style and by making learning fun!  

Kris specializes in cajon, drum set, orchestral percussion and mallet instruments. She currently gigs in Charleston, SC with various bands and teaches several students piano & drum lessons.
