Book Review: The Buccaneer of Nemaris: Of Forests and Friends

After reading the first book in the Buccaneer of Nemaris series, I had to dive into the second book, The Buccaneer of Nemaris: Of Forest and Friends. And I am so glad I did. The book is an epic tale crossing an entire kingdom of knights, unicorns, dragons, wizards, and more. It is perfect for boys and girls 10 and up.

The story takes place many years before the first book and follows the adventures of a young herbalist apprentice named Janna. When her father, the master herbalist, is kidnapped by a sinister wizard, Janna is forced onto a quest to collect the mystical Amaris root.

Along the way, she befriends a royal messenger, the princess of Xavier, and a unicorn named Amaryn. But no sooner has the temperamental wizard forced her on the quest than he grows dissatisfied with her and sends minion after minion to stop her. As she struggles with each obstacle, she must stay true to her heart to reach to top of the mountain, collect her treasure, and save her father.

The world of this series is rich, fantastical, and beautifully described by the author. This book exponentially expands the world, and as you read you discover new lands, kingdoms, and fascinating histories. I especially loved learning about important past events through the lenses of different characters.

Each character in the story, felt real and belonging to this wonderfully crafted universe. I especially loved the villain of the story, the dark wizard Wallack. While being evil, he was flawed and tortured. This made him unpredictable and feel genuine.

I highly recommend this book to all young readers and am excitedly anticipating the next installment in the series.
