I recently discover a hidden gem of a book, perfect for kids 10 and up. It is a coming of age story of two orphans growing up in a sprawling ghetto awakening to their special abilities. Written by John Darryl Winston, it is a touching, beautiful story that will make you laugh, think, and tug on your heartstrings.

February is Black History month. It is a time to reflect, recognize, and celebrate the accomplishments of African Americans to history. This is of paramount importance for everyone in society as the history books often fail to identify the many important advances to science, technology, and culture by African Americans.

Reading wonderful children’s books written by black authors or about black characters is the perfect way to commemorate the month. And I can think of no better way to honor its intensions that to branch out and read some excellent books published by independent authors.

As everyone tries to stay warm in the midst of winter, thoughts of spring and summer dance in our heads. Still months away from the warm weather, now is the perfect time to start thinking and planning your next vacation.

Many parents with small children are nervous about traveling with them. Don’t be afraid. The perfect time to travel is when your children are still young. It will instill a sense of adventure in them and expand their minds beyond their own neighborhood. Perfect for nourishing a developing mind.
